I’ve spent a great deal of time travelling recently, both for work and personally and I’ve been meaning to talk about it for a while. I have been busy but that’s not really a good excuse. I’ve just been a little lethargic and dare I say it, lazy with this site.
I’ve been writing a lot for others over the last couple of months and creatively I’ve had nothing in the tank and nothing I believed was worth sharing. That’s a rubbish excuse though so I’m going to do better.
Let me share with you the places I’ve been recently and then I’ll talk about my current trip and a few plans.
In mid-February, a group of friends and I went for a weekend to Bucharest. Friends had travelled from a few different places and Bucharest seemed like a handy central meeting point that none of us had ever visited before.
While the weekend was mostly about spending time together, and being social, I couldn’t help myself but take photos everywhere I went. It was planned as a boozy weekend but we took a day to visit Transylvania and see a few castles. Annoyingly though the fog rolled in pretty heavily for most of the day so there weren’t as many good photos as I’d like from that part of the trip.
Not long after that weekend was over I had an extended work trip.
Work sent me out to a place in South Korea called Gangneung. It’s where the Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Winter Games are being held next year – well the non-mountain aspect of it anyway.
I spent pretty much all my 13 days there inside an ice-rink, but I did shoot some of the most amazing sunrise photos I’ve ever managed during the trip – including the one at the top of this post, and the one below.
I arrived home on Sunday and today, three days later, I’m heading off to Beijing for another work trip.
The last time I was in Beijing I was armed with an old iPhone and about four hours off in seventeen days. So, while my photos are interesting and a couple are half-decent, they simply don’t do the place justice.
This time I’m taking my full camera gear setup and we now work in shifts so that we get some time to go and experience the cities we visit. Expect a lot of photos to come from the trip. I intend on using every spare moment I have to properly explore the city.
I’ll share some of them here, but for a day-by-day look at what I’ve captured go follow me on Instagram.
I’m going to be there for around 13 days, and while I do have to work most of that time I aim to see as much as I can without it feeling rushed. We’ll see what happens.
There are several things I’m contemplating from my career, personal life, to things like this website and for most of them I don’t have definitive answers yet. I’m working on them though and I’ll share some things here later when I have them figured out.
What I do want to share today though are my plans for this website. They’re not 100% fully formed but if I waited until they were I’d never do anything. I’m guilty of falling into inaction when I try to make things perfect before I start them and I really need to give myself a creative kick in the ass.
I’m pretty good at going out and taking photos almost every day. I could definitely be better, especially when I’m home in Edinburgh, and I’m doing my best to change that. The thing that needs to drastically improve though is the time I spend writing for myself and my own projects.
My plan, as partially baked as it is, begins here. I intend on writing on this website at least three times a week to begin with, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It gives me deadlines and it gets me writing to a regular schedule again.
Here I’ll be sharing stories from the road, updates on my business and anything else that I feel like writing about at the time. It’s going to be a mixed bag. I do really want focus on travel writing again and that is what you can expect most of the time on this site though. What shape that will take exactly is still a little unclear but that will be one of the main topics here.
There are also writing projects I want to do that aren’t really blog posts, but I will talk about those projects here once they get going and I have anything I can share about them.
In the past I’ve created individual websites for all of my interests and every time they’ve suffered from inattention and I’ve ended up deleting them. Which is a spectacular failure on my part but at least I know why they failed. My intention now is to tie the myriad interests I have into the only common thread they have, me.
One other specific goal I’m setting for myself, is that each post here will include at least one photo that I’ve taken. I’m determined the only photos you’ll ever see on this website from now on will be ones I’ve taken myself.
It’s time to go out and do the work. I’m a photographer and a writer, it’s about time I acted like it.
